A heroic Los Angeles police officer saved two young kids who were locked in an overheated car while their mom selfishly went shopping. Read on for all the shocking details.
Los Angeles Sheriff's Deputy Pedro Mejia is being called a hero after rescuing two young kids trapped inside a car in a shopping center parking lot.
With temperatures near 100 degrees, the police officer reached inside the cracked window and unlocked the door, freeing the one-year-old toddler and his two-week-old baby sister.
The mother, 18-year-old Arely Amaya, was allegedly shopping in the nearby shopping center while her kids sat helpless in the sweltering car, according to the Daily Mail.
The temperatures reached 92 degrees that day, with highs reaching up to 110-115 degrees inside the car, according to a press release from the Los Angeles Sheriff's Department.
A passerby noticed the children in the backseat of the car and called police. When Pedro arrived, he was able to break in and free the children. It is believed the kids were in the car between 20-25 minutes.
Pedro brought the children to his air conditioned police vehicle where they awaited paramedics. They were taken to the hospital, but have since been released and are doing well.
Arely was arrested on suspicion of child endangerment. She was taken into custody in lieu of $105,000 bail and faces possible felony charges.
