GMA surpassed the Today show in the morning show rat race for the first time in 16 years!
It's definitely a good morning for the cast and crew of ABC's Good Morning America. According to Nielsen ratings, the morning show has surpassed NBC's Today show in weekly viewership for the first time in 852 weeks.
'Thanks to all our @GMA viewers for giving us a week we'll never forget,' GMA anchor George Stephanopoulos tweeted on April 16. 'What a milestone!'
The ratings win was super-close, with GMA snagging just 13,000 more viewers than Today during the week of April 9.
The Today show's winning streak began in December 1995 when Bryant Gumbel and Katie Couric were the chief anchors. Last year, Today earned an estimated $484 million in revenue, while GMA only took in $298 million.
'Today's' 852-week winning streak had taken on a life of its own and as odd as it is to see it end, we should acknowledge just how remarkable it has been,' said Jim Bell, executive producer of the NBC morning show. 'So as we tip our caps to the team at 'Good Morning America,' we can take also take a bow ourselves and recognize the work done by countless staffers for so long. It is not an overstatement to call it one of the most incredible achievements in television history, one that is not likely to ever happen again.'
